Yoo-hoo!
Hey! Sorry about disappearance, but we're renovating our agency, so all computers are down and - OF COURSE! - my laptop decided to give up the ghost. It is now an ex-laptop and pushing up the chips or something.

SOOOO... I went mad and bought a 24" screen iMac with all the trimmings.

My bank account will probably never be in the green again. BUT oh wow was it worth it!

Am still learning how to use this beast, but I just a minuta ago managed to get back online and YOO-HOO!

Will talk incessantly with you tomorrow, but now brain - all four neurons - hurts and, though early, time for bed methinks.

HUGZ HUGZ HUGZ

P.S. I know it's stupid and quite shallow, but am in mad passionate love with aluminium-and-white keybaord with lovely silent keys and itty-bitty remote! You can do things on this thing from across the room! Totally useless, but, my! How decadent can a plastic thing get? :-D

You sound like my sis; of course, she only gets that nuts over her kitties, so mayhap it's not quite the same thing. ;) Welcome, back, too.

Hello! *waves*

Oh I get plenty nuts over an immense number of things. Mind like a deranged butterfly, that's me. Thanks!

Oh, I've sort of gotten used to you appearing and disappearing. It's all part of your mystery. =] Welcome back. *HUGS*

Decadence is a good thing. :D And ruining yourself on a computer at least makes more sense than ruining yourself on bad coffee, which I have done this month (honestly, I'm such a dweeb that even my substance abuse problems are lame... ^_^; ). Enjoy. =]

I have a mystery? OOOOOOOOOh! *starry eyes*

HUGZ

Why a dweeb? Coffe is LIFE, man! Where would I be without my four cups in the morning? Sleeping in bed, that's where. Although to throw money away on bad coffee may be another matter... :P

Am enjoying. A lot. This thing works! How are you, luv? Do I detect a note of despondency in your words?

Traditionally, every woman is supposed to be a mystery, but I suspect that's just something men use as an excuse for their failure of empathy... =] That said, you just love being the mysterious stranger who appears out of nowhere like a wind carrying the scent of far-off lands, admit it. ;)

Ooooh yes. Coffee is a godsend. Without caffeine, I would probably melt into a puddle of listless sloth. =]

Despodency? Nah, not me. :D Life's under control, at least as much as life ever gets. I've even adapted to project work. Of course, now our project leader has changed all the rules, so I'm going to have to re-adapt to the new way of doing project work. Hmpf. Some people are so inconsiderate. =]

I have read Making Money! :D I can heartily recommend it. It doesn't entirely live up to Going Postal, and there's a couple of minor problems, but all in all it was a great read. :D

And now I'm reading The Left Hand of Darkness. It's, er, interesting at the very least... And Le Guin seems to have the same view of what fantasy is all about as me. :)

Ursula LeGuin is a VERY good writer, also an intelligent woman and Left Hand is Sci-fi. :P I knew you'd be a little disturbed by it and also you'd like it a LOT. *G*

Making Money is what I'm preparing a verbose post about. Tomorrow, if I can find the time. I agree about the minor problems. But... well, I'll save it for the post.

Oops! I forgot to be mysterious, dinnI?

Well, if I were to express myself entirely correctly, she seems to feel that sf is about the same thing that I feel fantasy is about. I need to make a post about that. Meh, I've gone lazy and inefficient - I have to stop frittering away my time reading [info]mike_smith's criticism of the HP series! ^_^;;

What disturbs me about LHoD is that I keep picturing the characters as some kind of slightly effeminate males, which is really way off base. Is that just because LeGuin keeps calling them "he," or is this some kind of cultural-brainwash thing whereby I naturally think of maleness as the default? (or more charitably, do I think of maleness as default because I'm male?) I wonder how I'd see it differently if LeGuin said "she" instead of "he"? Or if she said "it" instead? None of them would really work any better, and it's kind of annoying to realise that it's impossible to talk about people without dragging their gender into it every step of the way...

... which I guess is sort of one of the things LeGuin is commenting on here, isn't it? ^_^;

Not to worry. You are naturally mysterious. =]

Yep!

.. which I guess is sort of one of the things LeGuin is commenting on here, isn't it?

Yep!

That's why it's disturbing, because she manages to write a 'verse you really have no words or cultural referents for. The BEST of sci-fi. And, of course, it's a perfectly snarky commentary on our cultural biases about sex and gender.

Personally, I think she keeps calling her people 'he' because she felt - at that time - she had to hammer home the concept that ours is a patriarchal culture and so everything is related to 'he'. Also, she wants to shock her readers with a male Earthling having to face his own gender-related issues. :-D

Mike Smith is funny... up to a point. Not that I wish in any way, shape or form to defend La Rowling. UGH! Not even dead! UGH! BUT... he's not as funny as he thinks he is and, after a while, he palls. On me, at least. Though I admit that, taken in small doses, I rather like his snark.

HUGGGZIES! Am back from the dead and the terminally busy.

Oh, I forget - the bad coffee is because I'm weirdly fond of sitting on cafés and reading. I am at a loss to explain why it's better than just sitting in a chair at home with a cup of coffee and reading, but somehow, it heightens the reading experience. And no, it doesn't make any sense to me either. ^_^;

AAAAAAH!

Nonono, I do understand you. I do the same thing, only in places where they have good coffee. That's because I'm a posh snob about coffee. So there. :P

I've tried to be a posh snob about coffee. I really have. I would love to be a deep, black-clad person who sits on cafés and ponders the deep questions while sipping something foamy and foreign-sounding. But I seem to be doomed to be a deep, black-clad person who sits on cafés and ponders the deep questions while gulping down cup after cup of perfectly ordinary coffee because that's the kind that they offer endless refills of. I can't help it, what I basically want when it comes to caffeine is LOTS. ^_^;;;

Being naturally mysterious - HA! - am not going to be dragged into endless carping about coffee.

Will only, mysteriously, say: coffee is good, good coffee is better, real coffee with no American stupid names is best. :-D

The silent keyboard is lovely! You type and it goes *silence silence silence* which is soothing. :-D

The remote, OTOH, is daft. Heh...
